Location of Penn’s Treaty of Friendship with the Lenni-Lenape
It is believed that on this site in 1683, William Penn signed a Treaty of Friendship with Chief Tamanend of the Lenape Turtle Clan under a great Elm tree. The event is immortalized in a painting by Benjamin West. The land that is now the park was part of the Lenape village of Shackamaxon.
