Founded in 1743 by Benjamin Franklin and others, the American Philosophical Society was an organization for the scientific learning of the learned. Its early distinguished members included George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamiliton. Later Thomas Edison joined the Society. Nighttime visitors claim to have caught a glimpse of Franklin’s ghost!
