Oldest continuous Methodist Church in the USA.
Organized in 1767, St. George’s licensed Richard Allen and Absolom Jones, the first African American Methodist preachers by 1784. In protest over segregated worship, Allen and Jones led a walkout and subsequent founding of the African Free Society (1787), St. Thomas African Episcopal Church (1792), and Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church (1794).
